You have almost completed the semester, so, how do you view Critical Literacy now? If you have any comments and suggestions, please do so as it helps for the betterment of the course as a whole.

Critical literacy! Again! It basically made me learned about on how to think in wider perspective. It is so interesting even though it has a bad impression in the first place, and challenging (absolutely) to learn this course because it activates my brain. Mostly it related to criticism or careful analysis about something such as article, movie and others. Moreover, it also asked me to not be prejudice in the ways I should always consider other perspective even it was totally different from my perspective. More than that, it also taught me to stop being stereotype about others with my own belief because it was so unfair for others to be judge depend only from my eyes which mean it all from my preference and it possibility could be false.Obviously it is a good thing , right?

I can see the point that we need to think critically even for small matter as I learn and go through this course. Let me give some example...I love shopping (which I think everyone love it or maybe just me) which mean that I love to spend money. There was a day when I really attract to buy a stunning dress but then suddenly I realize that it is not a need but a desire. In other words, it is not even important because I did not really like to wear dress. So what the point to buy the dress if I probably not going to wear it and may perhaps lead me to be irresponsible because I like to waste money that been given by my parent. I been reflecting my own self and I just realize something, we need to think critically when to make decision because we want our decision to be precise. From here, I believe that it train me to be able to come out with my own views which mean I able to create with my own perspective that is different from usually.
Since this course is so challenging or in other words was quite stressful(or really stressful)because it need a lots of research and think outside the box(critical thinking), so I believe that the lecturer should arrange flexible timetable in a week. As for example, if today has that class as it should have a gap at least one day before another class. So the students have time to finish up the task given and do their best.  But then, I admit that it is a good effort that lecturer always give out many exercise in group for the student to be more understanding about this subject and many good example so that we can refer from it.(Thank you madam!!)

Last but not least, I hope that my comments and suggestion could helps for the betterment of the course as a whole. I think that this course was so fun to be learning because it can be apply in our daily life and full of thrill when in learning process.
Thank you~~

Proposition: Life is a mere illusion and just like the world is a stage as we use it as a stepping stone for a showcase of our talents. Provide at least two (2) premises or counter arguments for the proposition. Write in complete paragraph(s).

Life is a mere illusion and just like the world is a stage as we use it as a stepping stone for a showcase of our talents. Life basically is the state that follows birth, and precedes death which the state of being alive and living meanwhile illusion is anything that seems to be something that it is not and a thing that is or likely to be wrongly perceived or interpreted by the senses. I cannot agree that life is a mere illusion because nothing last longer and we cannot achieve everything that we desire for in our life. So our illusion been destroyed by our reality. But I can agree that illusion somehow always be apart in our life. “Illusion is the first of all pleasures.”(Voltaire) Even for me, I do dreaming a lots in a day but then I can escape from the reality that so different from I been imagine. “Life is difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it. Once we truly know that life is difficult - once we truly understand and accept it - then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.” (Peck)

The fact that we cannot achieve what we want was cruel enough so we want to believe and live with the illusion we pleasure but the truth we are living in reality not be the same as illusion that we hoping for. Life is full of dramas, lies and temporary because it is not illusion so our life did not flow as what we dream. In life we don’t have any guarantee of what will be happen next because it is so unexpected. “Ultimate reality cannot be defined by concepts or words. It could be thought to be unchangeable. But hardly anything in the universe is truly permanent. (Yacobi, 2013)The truth is you don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow. Life is a crazy ride, and nothing is guaranteed.” (Eminem) If we only dream about it, it only will stay as a dream or illusion because the reality is we need to run for it.”We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self discipline and effort.”(Jesse Owens).
The world is not just a stage as we use it as a stepping stone for a showcase of our talents. This world not completely is all about presenting ourselves but there are lots of things we want from this world because I believe we not live in this world just for the world but also for our afterlife. For example, even in Islam, we need to balance both for this “planet” as well as for afterlife. It is not false to said that this world is a stage for us promoting ourselves to gain something beneficial for us and we are aware that we only an actor/actress in this world. This world is a place where we gains memories and experience.”Life is a rough biography. Memories smooth out the edges.”(Terri Guillements). It should able to create beautiful memories as we grow older.

Thus, life is a reality and we must to face it because it will happened even we hoping that it not. This world is a place where we gains experience, memories and knowledge. It happened. There is no avoiding it, no forgetting. No running away, or flying, or burying, or hiding. ( Laurie Halse Anderson). So guys, live your life, be happy, be real.

“The latest incident about BFM newsreader being threatened with death, rape and being burnt alive by those I assume to be Malay-Muslim netizens brings forth serious questions for this country. Is this country safe for our children to live in? If a simple point is raised against such issues as Hudud or even such issues as democracy and clean elections can produce outburst of murder, rape and burning people alive, what does it say about our country, its citizens and our leadership?”….Prof Dr. Mohamad Tajuddin Mohamad Rasdi.(Speak Up, theSun, March 26, 2015)

Honestly speaking, this issue is a serious matter to me because overall it had been happened in our community and it involved Malaysians. We might find this issue somehow was amusing to discuss about it because it did fold up with different parties. Moreover, we are not capable enough to talk about it. But still, we should be concern about it right? Yes or no? I belief it is one of our responsibility as Malaysian to react about this incident.

As far as I concern, I am Malay or specifically a Muslim and of course I am Malaysian. I do feel that the issue that been exposed by Prof. Dr Mohamad Tajuddin somehow open my eyes. I felt that Muslims or Malay-Muslims are being unintelligent with their superior keyboard ability where they recklessly comments with ghastly comments about this case. It was so shameless where we openly exposed our own lacking regarding Malay-Muslim ethic because I believe that they are the dominant in this issue. So where can we find the true Muslim who fight bravely for the truth as well as peaceful when most of them are sitting in front of keyboard and typing negative and awful words for their own community without being rational and fair. Of course it is not wrong to have different perspective but then, please respect others too.

The question that been asked by Prof. Dr Mohamad Tajuddin whether this place is safe place to children actually should be evaluate in critical ways. Even the victims, his daughter, Aisyah Tajuddin did said , “Since the video was published, numerous death and rape threats have been made directly against me, my family, my colleagues, and my friends.” (Aisyah Tajuddin) Perhaps this situation give more harm that we could be imagine in future if these cases still happening and leading in our community. How can we let our generation to live in danger when we are already aware about this situation? We cannot, right? I can’t.
We are Malaysian, who been portrayed as a community that polite and harmony so why don’t we show that value well. People could make mistakes because in fact we are full of mistakes since we are not perfect. So in that way, try to be more considered and be forgiveness because the victim, Aisyah Tajuddin already seeks for forgiveness. “I wish to take this opportunity to apologies for both my tone and demeanor in the video. It was never my intention to mock. It was never my intention to insult. I realise that many took offence. For that, I am truly sorry. I would never, under any circumstance, insult or condemn any religion, let alone my own.”(Aisyah Tajuddin) By then we also can improving our own self to be better than before where we learn from mistakes that happened which we need to be more careful when say or write something each other.
Everything actually could be solved in a good way where both parties will be treating equally which they able to explain or give out perspective from their position. Thus, we can avoid any misunderstanding or negativity in community and apply humanity in every action.

Let's create an integrated global community where we have shared benefits and responsibilities, and we don't fight because of our differences.

Stereotyping is exaggerated generalizations associated with a categorizing system, they go beyond the facts at hand and make claims that usually have no valid basis. However, it is also something that most people find difficult to avoid from doing. So, let’s explore your sense of tendency to make generalizations by expanding the following statement.

“Women shouldn't be behind the wheels.”
In life, it is a common thing when people being stereotype in a community especially when involved about gender. There are many stereotypes that naturally make a big discrimination between men and women. As for me, I cannot deny that somehow, sometimes I do stereotype based from my perspective. Sorry!

First of all, let us together be familiar with it where stereotyping was defined as an oversimplified or usually pejorative attitude of people hold toward those outside one’s own experience who are different. As this kind of thinking take part, it will result of incomplete or distorted information accepted as fact without question in return that could make others believe it. There is no doubt that one of most contentious  and prevalent form is gender where we can see even today that people being stereotyping about women who driving even rationally it is a “plain” issue.

In fact, there are certain people keep on questioning the ability of women to drive like men. “Women shouldn't be behind the wheels”, which the statement that I want to discuss here. Women been portrayed in a community as the people who in the different class from other people because women been defined as someone who having their main focus in life to care of their children, men and house as well as women are emotional and has a poor decision-making in crisis situation. Then, this aspect cause women as a party who did not competent of undertaking the responsibility behind the wheel because it might put them in danger especially in emergency case. But then, it is not a relevant reason to judge women in that position because as we can see that many women capable enough to hold higher position in career, university and even in community as some of them are even better than men.
The stereotype that women are bad in driving was untrue. It is not unfair because both sexes can drive because they able to require the license after faced the task given so there are no reasons to questioning about women who drive. We can see the proved from a research that stated, “Only one per cent of women, but 14 per cent of men, cut into traffic dangerously, while 24 per cent of men, but only 16 per cent of women, admitted to using hand-held mobiles while at the wheel.”(Winchester, 2015) So women driving are much safety than men driving as it did mentioned  “Women are on average less aggressive and more law-abiding drivers -- attributes that lead to fewer accidents.” (Edgerton, 2011)
Technically, men are more familiar with cars rather than women and honestly I do think so. People would be stereotype than women do not care particularly when buying or having a car because women are not caring much about the performance of the car. It is a wrong perception because women tend to be more specific about the car they want to use. I did find the evidence through my reading. “When it comes to car shopping, women are driven by features – engaging in extensive research to find the best fit – while from the outset many men are revved about a particular car brand, they are spending more time than men doing research to build confidence and knowledge.” (Macesich, 2014) Actually women are so serious about it cause they will seek more advise from an expect before buying a car rather than men as it been stated “women are more likely than men to ask tough questions and be more thorough during the car-buying process” (Tuttle, 2012). I should be agree with this when I do realized that women are so demanding when it come to spend money cause even for me I will choose something that affordable but with the best quality.
Moreover, women been displayed as someone who could be distracted easily with a lot of things such as about makeup and children. Some people said that women are too busy about their make up even when driving and could cause harm for themselves together with other driver around them and they also are busy to take care of their children especially the little ones. However, men also can be distracted easily because there is a research state that, “According to Australian insurance provider AAMI, men are more likely than women to have lost concentration while changing the car stereo (42% versus 38%), and more likely to use their cell phones without a hands-free accessory (21% versus 16%).”(McRae, 2012). Both sexes can be distracted by many things but as a driver they need to consider others in the road as well as to care their own safety.
Furthermore, many people stated that women are so bad when parking their cars. But there is a study said that women can park better than men. “a report by Britain's NCP (a parking operator) surveyed and ranked 2,500 drivers on aspects of parking such as locating a spot, timing, and positioning within a space and found that women out-performed men on most counts, even though only one-fifth of women surveyed felt that they were better. The fact that we drive more slowly let us find parking spots more quickly, while men wasted time and gas driving past spots and circling around.”(McRae, 2012). I often spend my free time to go to mall together with my girlfriends, and usually we are struggle when finding parking but then we get the parking after a few times circling around . From this experience, I realize that girls/women are more patient in finding parking because they drive slowly so they able to find parking faster because if I with boys/men, they are too rushing which in the same time we lose the empty parking lot and naturally waste more times.
In other ways, negative stereotype about women who driving actually could distracted and effect their driving performers as it been mentioned, “An Australian study found that women who are told that men are better drivers are more than twice as likely to collide with jaywalking pedestrians as other women in a similar test.”(Molloy, 2008)

But then, it is depend on the driver responsibility when being in road because we actually cannot be simply being prejudice about women who drive because as we all knew that women are much calm and careful in many ways. According to Dr. Sivak “There are three dominant driver-related factors, including the probability of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, one's own driving skills and the driving skills of the other driver involved.”(Smith, 2011)

So we should understand that after all, we should not be prejudice about women driving but should be concern on how both sexes driving in the road. If men can drive, women also can drive. Basically, a driver should be mentally and physically ready where they should have skill, knowledge as well as ethic in road.

You heard comments and maybe grievances from your seniors about Critical Literacy, but what is/are your expectation(s) or hope for this subject as you are just started.

Assalammualaikum w.b.t. and good day guys~~~
Attention!!! This is my first entry ever. I will talk about Critical Literacy or “CL” according from the task given. Let’s study first about it, OK!! Critical Literacy is an instructional approach, stemming from Marxist critical pedagogy that advocates the adoption of “critical” perspectives toward text. So in others word it will encourages readers to actively analyse texts and offers strategies for what proponents describe as uncovering underlying massages.

What in your mind when you heard about this subject “Critical Literacy”?  Could it be just a word or something deeper than that? As for me, I think it is something deeper that just a subject because the name itself pictured a mystery feeling and seem to be something requires higher density of thinking. Before this, honestly I never know about “Critical Literacy” but then I discover about it as I entered semester 4.
As I heard “Critical Literacy” was one of my subject this semester, I felt so curious since a lot of seniors that I knew kept on talking about this “hardcore” subject which actually made me be a bit nervous to face it. At first, I did felt the difficulty that been talked about but still I accept the obstacle as one of my learning process. Seniors did mention it is a tough subject and I also did think so. Firstly, I hope that this subject can improve my English because I am an English student especially involved my vocabulary.
Moreover, I want to learn something new and challenging because as I mentioned before that it will be one of learning process and I believe it could mature my knowledge. The word “critical” itself actually expect me to learn something that out of box as well as make my brain explore in bigger “space” where I can discover something that I will not be expected from a particular text. Literacy made me think about text or phrases that may contain others different meaning behind it that could wider the way I will think in the future. I also expect that “Critical Literacy” could give me benefits in my daily life because somehow I did think it actually will be apply in every second of our life since I believed that every action that we take will incorporate the way we think and how we will make a decision about it.

Since it is a subject in my semester 4, I been hoping that I could gain an A and in others way could help me to have a better pointer for this semester. Thus, “Critical literacy” is a famous subject to be learned as it will give exciting feeling in the way to learn further about it.
